NEVER Ask For a Promotion
There are many reasons why asking your instructor for a promotion would be considered rude. A lot of times it tells the instructor that you think you are better than you actually are. Which inclines them to show you that you aren’t as good as you think you are, and the process of that can sometimes be uncomfortable. Instead of requesting a promotion you can ask your coach or instructor “what should I be doing to try to get to the next level?” Questions like that tell the instructor that you are dedicated to developing your Jiu Jitsu skills. This rule should also be understood by parents as well as students. If you are a parent and your child is actively practicing Jiu Jitsu and training hard do not talk to the coach and make a case for your child to get a couple stripes or a new belt. Instead ask the coach what is needed to be done or what can you do at home to push your child to the next level, it shows the coach that you are trying to understand Jiu Jitsu more and help your child become better at Jiu Jitsu. Let the coach make the decisions and ultimately determine when your child is ready for the next level, after all he or she is the expert in Jiu Jitsu.
